They’re claiming this group is at risk of committing acts of extremist violence.
A leaked memo shows the FBI was targeting Catholic conservatives.
A leaked memo discusses intentions for the FBI to infiltrate groups that identify as traditionalist Roman Catholics in search of “Radical-Traditionalist Catholics,” or RTCs, which have been labeled by the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center as national security threats.
The report – titled, “Interest of Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists in Radical-Traditionalist Catholic Ideology Almost Certainly Presents New Mitigation Opportunities” – was put forward by the FBI’s Richmond field office and stated:
“RTCs are typically characterized by the rejection of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) as a valid church council; disdain for most of the popes elected since Vatican II, particularly Pope Francis and Pope John Paul II; and frequent adherence to anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, anti-LGBT, and white supremacist ideology.”
The memo also claimed these RTCs have an “increase in hostility toward abortion-rights advocates on social media in the run-up to and aftermath of” the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
The report assesses with “high confidence” that the FBI can mitigate the threat of RTCs recruiting sources within the Catholic Church.
Although the FBI has retracted the leaked memo for “not meet[ing] the exacting standards,” reports like this could be used to target other Christian groups or denominations that choose to uphold Biblical beliefs instead of the latest “woke” ideology or tenet.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue denounced the report’s attacks on traditional Catholics saying, “There hasn’t been a wave of virulent anti-Catholicism in the West like what we are currently witnessing in at least a hundred years.”
“The report says there is a difference between RTCs and ‘traditionalist Catholics.’ The former are labeled extremist anti-Jewish and anti-gay bigots who reject Vatican II and who adhere to white supremacist ideology; the latter prefer the Latin Mass and pre-Vatican II teachings.”
Donohue also said that none of the “Radical Traditional Catholicism Hate Groups” mentioned in the memo were violent organizations.
“The document lists as RTCs a few groups which I am familiar with, and while they are certainly not associations the Catholic League identifies with, they are not violent-prone entities. Some of these
people may be kooky, but they are not exactly Antifa, about which the FBI has done little. So why the probe?”
“Why then the war on RTCs?” Donohue asked.
“What’s next? A war on Catholics who are orthodox and who summarily reject the morally debased society that militant secularists have created?”
The Daily Caller reported that the FBI will be conducting an internal review of the memo.
