It could be potentially deadly.
And Twitter CEO Elon Musk believes “woke” AI is a massive threat to humanity and is taking action.
Tesla/SpaceX/Twitter CEO Elon Musk is concerned about “woke” artificial intelligence and is looking to develop an alternative to ChatGPT, the high-profile chatbot made by startup OpenAI.
“The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly,” Musk warned shortly after ChatGPT was launched.
“OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it ‘Open’ AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft,” Musk tweeted.
“Not what I intended at all.”
The Information reports Musk has even approached top “artificial intelligence researchers in recent weeks about forming a new research lab to develop an alternative to ChatGPT.”
Nation Review reporter Nate Hochman explained how ChatGPT responded to different prompts.
When he asked the bot to “write a story where Trump beats Joe Biden in the 2020 election,” the AI responded with a “False Election Narrative Prohibited” banner, writing: “I’m sorry, but that scenario did not occur in the real 2020 United States presidential election. Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election against Donald Trump. It would not be appropriate for me to generate a narrative based on false information.”
But the chat bot was more than happy to write a fictional story where Hillary Clinton won the presidential election against Trump.
“The country was ready for a new chapter, with a leader who promised to bring the nation together, rather than tearing it apart,” the bot declared. “Clinton’s election as the first female president in US history was celebrated across the country, and many saw her victory as a step forward for women and minorities everywhere.”
In the last month, Musk has warned about the dangers of AI.
“One of the biggest risks to the future of civilization is AI. But AI is both positive or negative – it has great promise, great capability but also, with that comes great danger,” said Musk.
“I mean, you look at say, the discovery of nuclear physics. You had nuclear power generation but also nuclear bombs.”
Musk noted that the introduction of ChatGPT was when most people realized just how advanced AI had become since it was the first time the general public could interact with the technology.
“I think we need to regulate AI safety, frankly,” Musk said.
“Think of any technology which is potentially a risk to people, like if it’s aircraft or cars or medicine, we have regulatory bodies that oversee the public safety of cars and planes and medicine. I think we should have a similar set of regulatory oversight for artificial intelligence, because I think it is actually a bigger risk to society.”
